More than four years after the pandemic hit New York City, outdoor dining structures that were erected outside restaurants are facing a deadline. Restaurants that currently offer outdoor dining must apply to the city’s new outdoor dining program and comply with new guidelines by Saturday night. Those who do not apply must take down their setups or face fines. As of Friday afternoon, more than 1,900 restaurants had applied for the program, representing a significant drop from the number of applications received during the temporary outdoor dining program at the height of the pandemic.
